A little while back, I tried the oil cleansing method using coconut oil. For those of you that don't know what OCM is, it's basically cleansing your skin with oil (duh!). Oil is great for cleansing makeup, dirt and drawing out oil from deep down in your pores. Coconut oil is great because it has antimicrobial and healing properties which is great for acne.
I decided to go all in and use the OCM morning and night. My skin was looking amazing for the first week. It was soft, even complexion, no pimples, minimal black and white heads, hydrated, glowing, etc. After that, my face began breaking out like a champ. I heard that it's supposed to "purge" and all that jazz, which is fine, but my face just kept purging. I thought maybe it was too much oil and my skin was getting clogged up. I would apply a small amount of coconut oil to my hands, warm it up, massage on face and remove, multiple times, with a hot face towel, then tone and go on with life as usual. I stopped cleansing with oil in the morning and returned to my Pangea cleanser which brought my skin back to normal.
I now only use oil to cleanse off makeup as well to moisturize, otherwise, I use Pangea or any other facial cleanser that I have on hand morning and night. I might give this another go using a different oil, but I'm not sure yet. I would like to and will be trying out the honey challenge as soon as I'm close to running out of my facial cleansers. Honey is antibacterial, full of antioxidants and a natural humectant (attracts and retains moisture) which I think would work amazingly well for my skin and all other skin types.
Have you tried either the Oil Cleansing Method or Honey Challenge? Let me know!
I used to use the OCM with a combination of olive and castor oil. It was great for about six months and then I wanted to try something else for a change and when I tried to go back to it, it just didn't work for me any more...not sure why! Now I just use oil to remove my eye makeup and stick to a regular cleanser otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI think coconut oil is comedogenic though, so you might have better results with another oil
Really? That's so weird that it stopped working for you. I've read about castor and olive oil mixes, maybe I'll try that combo if I decide to do the OCM again.
DeleteCoconut oil is comedogenic? I've read that it isn't! Maybe it is if you use too much, which I likely did. I use wayy too much of everything lol
Aw, I'm sorry the oil cleansing method didn't work for you. I had to look into this method too, it's kind of messy and too much for a lazy-person like me, but it didn't make me break out. Definitely try a lighter oil and see if that works.
ReplyDeletePssst Nicole, by the way. I end up caving in and buying a La Bella Figura Organic Barbary Fig Seed Oil for $70 when it used to be $90. That is still really expensive for me and I was kind of clutching my card and my heart at the same time!! I know what you mean though- their products are super pricey but I'll see if the oil is worth it.
Ahh I love taking the time to cleanse my face and I'm lazy too! I've been trying apricot kernal oil and like that so much better.
DeleteOmg you did!?! Good job! I can't wait to hear what you think about it. I can totally see you fighting with yourself on that purchase haha!
I use OCM with jojoba oil at night to remove my natural make up. After removing my make-up, I follow up with 1/2 a natural make-up remover towelette (better safe than sorry!) and my natural cream cleanser.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, soo ocm works well for you then! Are you using the Sukin cream cleanser?
DeleteI just came across your lovely blog and wanted to share that I had the exact same experience as you with coconut oil. I used it for about a month and the first two weeks were great and then it all went to crap. I had heard about the purging effect too (gross) so kept using it longer than anyone with good sense should haha...turns out it is very comedogenic for some and others can use it just fine. I'm back to regular cleansers, but I still use oils for moisturizing. I really like Badger's Damascus Rose Beauty Balm, and I'm dabbling with sweet almond oil right now. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet, thank you! And thanks for sharing your experience. I hate that it worked so well at first because I was beginning to think I had a good thing going! As I'm sure you did as well. Oils are fantastic for moisturizing, I use them all the time. You should try seabuckthorn, tamanu and apricot kernal. I'm not sure if you have acne prone skin but those have worked fantastic for me. Naturally Marcy loves the badger balm too! I will take a look at it :) xo
