Trash Talk July 2014 (Empties)

Another month has passed us by, and I'm thrilled to be killing my stash. August will likely be all skin care and the last of these huge empties posts. As I've mentioned before, I plan on taking the minimalist approach to my skin, body, and hair care routines. Especially with the colder months coming, less is more for my skin.

Grab a drink and snack, and let's get started!

*New Leaf Naturals Chai to Relax Hand Soap - review here - I really did enjoy this hand soap, despite the scent not being as strong as I normally like, and it worked really well for cleaning makeup and dirt off of my hands. Sadly, castile soap bases irritate my hands.

*Pure+Simple Organic Hair Oil - I've had this hair oil for a very long time and never reviewed it because they've discontinued it. It had a unique scent, that I can't even described, but worked well to condition my scalp and hair.

Deep Steep Body Mist in Honeydew Spearmint - Maaaaan, this is my favourite Deep Steep scent. So refreshing! This body mist was lovely as a refresher, especially when I worked long days and felt stinky. The scent wasn't overpowering and didn't linger for long (sadly) but filled its purpose. I have already repurchased.

Deep Steep Body Wash in Honeydew Spearmint - review here - Love, love, love! The scent was perfect, the foaming action was great, and my skin always felt soft after using it. My boyfriend used up most of this bottle (Thanks Chris) and so I didn't get to enjoy it for as long as I had hoped. Iherb was out of this scent, so I picked up Chamomile Lavender and will say that I'm not loving the scent as much as this one.

*New Leaf Naturals Stink Stopper - review here - Fantastic deodorant! It never irritated my pits and kept me stink free almost all day. I wasn't a fan of the scent and didn't like that it turned white close a bit green (even though it washed off). If there were more scents available and shipping wasn't insane to Canada, I'd 100% pick up another one.

*Organic Bath Co. Stress Less Body Scrub - review here - Nothing has changed from my initial review. It exfoliated really well and left my skin soft without feeling greasy. The scent grew on me, but it wasn't my favouritet. I'm currently using Zesty Mornings...swoon.

*Hush & Dotti Original Cleansing Balm (sample) - I cannot get into cleansing balms. I struggled to use this up and while it was nice, it's just not my thing. I also found the essential oils a little much for my sensitive skin. Will not be picking up the full size.

*Blissoma Mild Rice Facial Cleanser - review here - I thoroughly enjoyed this cleanser. It was actually used on my face and shoulders to keep acne at bay, worked well! The scent wasn't my favourite though and I'm not sure this would work as well for me in the colder months. May repurchase next summer.

*evie Lovingly Pure Toning Rose Water - review here - Loved this soooo much! The smell was beautiful, it hydrated my skin well, set my makeup, and refreshed my skin mid-day. This beautiful bottle comes with a $50 price tag and I'm still debating on whether to splurge.

*Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel - review here - I forgot how long a bottle of Thayers lasts, geez. This was a long time favourite of mine, until I started branching out a bit. The ingredients, size, and price are all right. I really liked using this to mix up clay masks, but can't see myself repurchasing as I've found other toners I love even more.

*Wedderspoon 100% Manuka Honey - This is one item that I can't live without, I actually have a tablespoon left that I scooped into a smaller container. Works well as mask (alone) or mixed with clay. It reduces redness, softens my skin, and kills breakouts. Will definitely be repurchasing.

Living Libations HealthyGums Clay Toothpaste - review here - This toothpaste worked just as well as the one I originally reviewed (Neem Enamelizer) but tasted a billion times better. Living Libations has their toothpaste perfected. They have worked so well for my teeth and gums, and I can't even believe the positive changes that I have seen. I've since picked up the Frankincense Fresh Truth ToothPaste and have been enjoying it.

Zoe Organics Everything Balm - I picked this up to see how it would compare to my beloved NBW Healing Balm and it doesn't even come close. Don't get me wrong, the packaging is super cute, application is easy, and ingredients are incredible but it doesn't work as well for me and my skin issues. Will not be repurchasing.

*The Mystic Masala Spicebodhi Kapha Body Oil - review here - While I never got used to the scent, this was a lovely body oil. I enjoyed using it on my legs and sore lower back. Will not repurchase.

*One Love Organics Gardenia Body Serum (sample) - The scent of this body oil was to die for, so damn good! It moisturized my skin beautifully and never left me feeling greasy. My only issue was that the scent didn't last longer. For that reason, I will not be purchasing the full size.

Physicians Formula Organic Wear CC Mascara - As with most of PF mascaras, this one smudged within minutes of applying. At work, I'd have to constantly check my eyes to ensure I didn't look like I had slept with makeup on and just rolled outta bed. The wand is similar to their others, large with short synthetic bristles, however, it's curved. The curve makes for easier application and the outcome was long, thick lashes. Of all the PF Organic Wear mascaras, FakeOut remains my fave.

*Graydon SPF 30 Sun Cream - review here - So much sadness going on, the pump on this amazing sunscreen stopped working (for the second time) and refused to pump out what's left :(. Still, this remains one of my favourite sunscreens. I loved how it could be used on face and body, didn't leave a white cast, moisturized, and blended with ease. It was a little gritty, but that disappeared the more it was blended in. Will be picking up a jumbo bottle for my next vacation.

Update (Aug. 3) - I did contact Graydon before doing this post and she was kind enough to offer a replacement, without hesitation, and her apologies. Really though, it's not her fault and that's why I didn't want to accept a replacement bottle. I was able to pop the top and scoop out the remaining sun cream into a little container. No waste!

Told ya it was a long one. Guess that's just expected of me now, eh? haha. What have you finished up this month? See any faves in my empties?

Faves Friday!

Hello lovelies and Happy Valentine's Day! While I don't partake in the fluff of this day, I realize that some of you might and I hope that it's a wonderful a day for you.

Last week I got super busy at work and by the time Monday came, I figured it made the most sense to just wait for today and combine the faves in one post. My skin has been really shitty lately, I've been breaking out and was even getting cystic acne (which isn't the norm for me). I simplified by skin care routine and took to these few items to help clear up my skin.

Aurelia Miracle Cleanser Sample (not pictured) - Mayah, one half of Call it Vanity, was kind enough to send me a sample...after I begged and threatened her. Kidding, I just begged. The cleanser was fantastic and I saw a reduction in redness and spots within two uses!!!! I've since run out and my skin just doesn't look as good. I need it in my life asap.

*Shamanuti Pumpkin Enzyme Masque (not pictured) - review here - I've been using this mask on my face, neck, and chest to help clear up any break outs. My skin hasn't been nearly as sensitive as it was in January, so I've been able to use it more often. I love that it exfoliates without having to use my hands, as to not spread bacteria around.

Pretty Ginger & Cypress Soothing Mud - review here - I've been mixing this mask with Wedderspoon 100% Raw Manuka Honey and Graydon Face Food Mist for an acne busting treatment every third day. Pretty draws out impurities with clay, manuka softens and aids in killing acne bacteria, and Graydon helps to soothe and heal acne/scars. It's a straight up dream team!

Lastly, I've been loving this Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Amarone, which is described as a raisin berry. It's definitely a berry and I find it looks a little more purple on my lips than it may seem in the tube. It's just so pretty and easy to wear. It feels like a moisturizing gloss but has the staying power of a stain and the pigmentation of any amazing lip product. I love it so much (even though it's not the most natural). Makes me feel sassy!

What have you been reaching for lately?

Reveal My Stash #2 - Skin Care: Cleansers, Toners, Moisturizers & SPF

And the reveal continues. I do have quite a bit of skin care, much of which I'm currently testing and haven't yet done full reviews of. Skin care is my life, that's the aesthetician in me speaking, and hopefully this will be a fun post for all you product hoarders junkies out there.

CLEANSERS

One Love Organics Cleansing Oil was a wonderful Christmas gift from my boyfriend and is used to remove makeup. On days that I don't wear makeup or am in the mood for a double cleanse, I use *Antipodes Grace Gentle Cream Cleanser. *Therapi Rose Otto Honey Gel Cleanser and *Shamanuti Activated Charcoal Cleanser are not suited to my very sensitive and reactive skin right now. Although, I am using Shamanuti on my acne prone chest, shoulders and back. I usually don't have more than 2 cleansers going at one time or in my "stash", so this is a little excessive for me.

TONERS

Pretty Chamomile Facial Tonic is my morning cleanse, Graydon Face Food is my before oil/moisturizer skin prep and Andalou Naturals Illuminating Toner is my makeup setter, mid day refresher, and basically whenever toner. I love and use all 3 daily.

MOISTURIZERS

*SBT Seabuckthorn Tea Cream was my summer love but, it's not hydrating enough for my skin right now. It'll get used up as soon as it warms up, not that I have much left. *Therapi Orange Blossom No. 3 Honey Moisturizer is my current go-to day and night moisturizer. S.W. Basics Cream is used on any super dry patches day or night.

SPF/SUNSCREEN

*Graydon Sun Cream is perfect for the colder months because of it's moisturizing properties. I have been using it daily mixed in with the Therapi moisturizer and find the combination amazing. *Consonant The Perfect Sunscreen worked better for me in the warmer months, however, I find myself using this a couple of times a week mixed with the Therapi moisturizer as well.

My goal is to work through the cleansers, I'm quite happy with everything else and don't feel overwhelmed by the quantity.

What's your stash like?

Reveal My Stash #1 - Hair & Body Care

Since it's #NoBuyJanuary and I swore I wasn't a hoarder, I thought it was time to reveal or "expose" my stash. It may be a tad disappointing, so I apologize now. Some of these products haven't been reviewed or even tried yet and one was even purchased this month...dun dun dun. My "stash" will include all backups and whatnot.

SHAMPOOS

*OM Organic Matter is a very gentle shampoo that I like to alternate with Deep Steep, which provides more of a "deep clean". By the way, the Deep Steep shampoo bottle drives me bonkers!! I dropped it the other day a bunch came spilling out since it's basically the consistency of water. ARG!! Anyway, that little bit of Alaffia was given to me from a friend's personal stash. She knows that I have a crazy scalp and a sensitivity to tea tree, so she gave me what was left in her bottle to try and see if it helps my dermatitis, without further irritating it.

CONDITIONERS

*Graydon Hair Smoothie doesn't work for me as a conditioner and I hate the scent. I've been using and loving it as a shave cream though. 100% Pure Honey & Virgin Coconut Conditioner is a recent purchase, yesterday to be exact. If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I've used up a bunch of oils that I was using in/on my hair. I don't normally use a conditioner and haven't for months now, but I want to grow out my hair and figured a deep conditioner might help. Sometimes, I don't feel like doing a full out oil mask and will go longer than I should without one. Therefore, this will be a huge help in making sure my hair gets the nourishment that it needs on really lazy days...or weeks..or months..you get it.

BODY WASH & SOAP

As you can see, I'm almost out of my Deep Steep Body Wash. It is such a beautiful wash! I like to alternate between soap and body wash often, and currently have a tiny sliver of lavender soap (not pictured) in my shower. On a Branch Monday Morning Soap was a Christmas gift and will be opened very, very soon.

See, not exciting at all. I hate having too many things in my drawers and/or open at the same time. The fact that I even have 3 shampoos bottles in my shower right now, regardless of the reasons, drives me absolutely nuts. I hate clutter and waste, and often find myself reorganizing, repurposing, or giving away whatever I can (closet, cabinets, clothes, products, etc).

What do you think about my hair and body care stash?

Graydon Hair Smoothie Review

Conditioner is one of those hair products that I don't really use anymore. Since chopping off my hair (including most of the colour dyed damaged ends), not dying it in almost 2 years, and discovering oils, I really don't have much need for them. With the Yarok shampoo drying out my ends, I decided to give this *Hair Smoothie a go. Keep in mind that I haven't used an actual conditioner in months, my hair is fine but I have lots of it, and I have dermatitis on my scalp. That all impacts how a product works for me, especially this one. I've already reviewed the *All Over Soap and *Sun Cream from Graydon in October and I loved those.

Description: Nourish your lovely locks with nutrient rich ingredients including broccoli seed oil while you infuse your scalp with *healthy hair growth* essential oils of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. We've been able to create a silicone free formulation that will leave your hair super soft and smooth but not weighed down. Great for all hair types!

I want to touch on broccoli seed oil first, which is a powerhouse antioxidant and rich in fatty acids. It has natural UV protection, deeply penetrates to provide lasting hydration, contains Vitamin C which is great for fighting free radicals and adding shine/glow to your skin and hair, and it replaces silicones. Replaces silicones? It basically has that same texture to it. Once you see the pictures below, you'll get it. This hair smoothie has a very interesting herbal scent. I (personally) find it a tad strong, lingers, and it's not all that enjoyable. It coats my hair and makes it feel super soft and sleek, which would be great for those with damaged/thick/coarse/curly/unruly hair. I use the smallest amount, just on my ends, and find my hair can feel greasy or weighed down if I use too much. I have tried using it on my scalp as well, just to reap the benefits of the essential oil blend, and my hair was a greasy mess. Again, the fact that I haven't used conditioner in a long time could be why my hair is reacting this way to it. Nobody else in my house uses conditioner, so I couldn't ask them to try it out to compare results. I think it is a great product with fantastic ingredients, however, it's just not right for my hair. I've started using it for shaving and it's amazing for that!

Retails for $25 CAN for 8 fl oz/240 ml. Can be purchased through Graydon and any one of her retailers.

Do you use conditioner or have you given it up?

Ingredients: purified water (aqua), vegetable glycerin (glycerol), broccoli seed oil (brassica oleracea italica), sunflower oil (helianthis annus), cetyl alcohol (coconut product), stearyl alcohol (mixed plant), cetrimonium chloride, hydrolyzed soy protein (glycine soja), olive oil (plea europaea), coconut oil (cocos nucifera), green tea extract (camellia sinensis), chlorophyll (chlorophyllin), in a blend of pure essential oils, vitamin e (mixed tocopherols) and nothing else!

What's in my Travel Bag!?

Some of you may already know, I went to Jamaica for a week. It was the first time in a couple of years that I went away and it was much needed. Most people have a hard time deciding what clothes to take, I had a hard time deciding what products to take! Thought I'd share what I decided on :)

Let's start with the most important, sun care!

If I were to do this post a few years back, you'd probably see a chemical filled SPF followed by a tanning oil. Having learned and finally realized how damaging UVA/UVB rays are, I took my sun care a little seriously this trip. I reapplied my sunscreen several times a day, especially after swimming.

For skin care I took Andalou Naturals Apricot Probiotic Cleansing Milk,*Corpa Flora Beaute Divine, Grenadine and Eclat Citrouille, George's Aloe with chamomile and lavender essential oil, *Odacite Eye Cream (sample), and *SBT Seabuckthorn Tea Cream (depotted).

Since I was going to be spending countless hours in the sun, I knew my face would need a few extra treatments. Took Pangea Organics Matcha Mask and *Odacite Hydrating Mask to help bring my skin back to life after a day baking in the Caribbean sun.

For hair and body care, I really wanted to keep it simple. I used Weleda's Calendula Shampoo and Body Wash as just that and must say that it's awesome as a shampoo. I also took *Delizioso Passion Fruit Body oil, *Lina Hanson Global Body Serum (which I use/used in my hair), Weleda Pomegranate Body Oil, Bee 23 Hotty Body Balm (depotted), and Aubrey Men's Deodorant Spray.

Finished several of the products that I took, which you'll be seeing in my empties post :P. I'm debating on doing a makeup version of this post, let me know if you'd like to see that!

Graydon - Clinical Luxury by Nature - SPF 30 Sun Cream Review

Sunscreen is super important and, while there are days that I forget to apply it, I try my hardest to apply it most days. Natural sun blockers that blend well and leave behind an invisible layer of UVA/UVB protection can be hard to find. Often times, a white cast is left behind which makes it unfavourable for those who are darker than a ghost or just don't enjoy looking like they're wearing white face paint. Look no further, *SPF 30 Sun Cream by Graydon is top notch and leaves no white cast! She also uses non-nano zinc oxide, which allows the zinc to sit on the skin as opposed to being absorbed into the skin.

Description: Blended with skin soothing, sun protecting zinc (a naturally occurring mineral) and a host of sun reflective carrier oils, this light textured cream with SPF 30 will infuse your face and body with the anti-oxidant protection you've been craving without any goo, grease or stickiness. We also use Green Tea in our formula which is rich in polyphenols (antioxidants that form part of the green tea leaves) and has been shown to provide internal and external protection from UV radiation and in turn, photo aging. You will enjoy re-applying this lovely unscented blend not only because it's so good for your skin when you're outside, but because it feels so good to put on. And guess what? This 'airless pump' allows you to use every last drop, so there's no product wastage. Plus it's a dream to throw in your bag or carry on luggage because it won't leak.

I've been testing this out for a few months now and, most recently, tested it on a sun filled vacation. Let me start with the brilliant packaging, I love airless pumps and this bad boy has one! The pump works so well, doesn't leak, and ensures that every bit of sunscreen stays fresh and bacteria free. The bottle is super light and easy to travel with. The ingredients list is chock full of greatness, including sea buckthorn oil (a personal fave), shea butter, aloe, and raspberry seed extract. All great for nourishing, soothing and loving your skin. The cream is white and a little a grainy at first with virtually no scent. There are times when I find it clings a little to dry patches, but for the most part it blends seamlessly and gives my skin an extra boost of hydration...which I need with the colder months here. I should mention though, it's not heavy or greasy which means all skin types could use it. When I first started using this, I was getting little bumps wherever it was applied and so I stopped using it. Then I gave it a go on my arms and same thing. Third time seemed to be a charm because It hasn't given me bumps or broken me out since. While in Jamaica, I used this on my face and neck daily and reapplied constantly. I'm happy to report that no sun burn in those two areas took place, which is a shocker because my nose and cheeks tend to burn first. I think it's great that this can be used on your face and body because it saves space in your bathroom and travel bag. While I personally find most natural sunscreen bottles too small for 7+ days in the sun with daily application and reapplication, this lovely sunscreen has a 240ml/8oz bottle option! Thank you vacation for giving me the opportunity to fall in love with this product. Definitely recommend!

Retails for $20 CAN for 50ml/1.7 fl oz or $33 CAN for 240ml/8oz. Can be purchased through Graydon or any of these e/retailers.

See the grainy texture?

Gone and no white cast!

Ingredients: purified water (aqua), zinc oxide (zinc oxide), cetyl alcohol (coconut product), stearyl alcohol (mixed plant), shea butter (butyrospernum parkii), cocoa butter (theobroma cacao), aloe vera (aloe barbadensis), cherry kernel oil (prunus avium), rice bran oil (oryza sativa), pumpkin seed oil (cucurbita maxima), buriti oil (mauritia flexuosa), sodium chloride (mixed plant), raspberry seed oil (rubus idaeus), seabuckhorn oil (hippophae rhamnoides), green tea (camellia sinensis), sodium lactate (sodium-l-lactate), rosemary co2 extract (rosmarinus officinalis L) and nothing else!

Graydon - Clinical Luxury by Nature - All Over Soap + Shampoo Review

Recently, or not so recently now, I got the opportunity to try out a few Graydon - Clinical Luxury by Nature products. The line is Canadian (with ingredients sourced from Canadian growers when possible), natural, and fabulous.

Graydon grew up in France and soon made her way to Canada. As a teenager, her skin care regime consisted of kitchen ingredients such as olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and baking soda. It was here that her dream of creating her own line began, and it was her extensive educational background and passion that made her dream a reality. The line consists of bioactive, plant based ingredients that each play an important role. "Bursting with omega rich oils, antioxidants, phytosterols, linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, carotenoids, high levels of both tocotrienols and tocopherols (which are the natural isomers of Vitamin E), flavinoids and a plethora of vitamins and minerals, the ingredients and research within our line offer you unparalleled quality and product functionality."  They're free of fillers, petrochemicals, toxic chemicals, phthalates, parabens, artificial frangrances and colours, etc.

The beauty herself - Graydon

I wanted to start off with the *All Over Soap + Shampoo because it's my favourite of what I've tried from the line.

Description: The All Over Soap + Shampoo will clean your whole body: hands, body, face + hair. This eco blended soap is infused with plant based and coconut ingredients - sulfate free of course! Its super fresh smell will leave your bathroom smelling like a spa. Infused with our Germs Away AromaBlend you will take solace knowing that our soap will leave your skin extra clean, killing germs the natural way using our signature synergy of essential oils (not through fragrance or nasty chemicals).
* Safe to use in the lake or ocean.

This soap smells strongly of rosemary, yet doesn't bother me at all. Plus, I find the scent fades. The plastic bottle is great because of the blue tint (blocking out UV light), the pump locks (great for travelling), and the bottle is refillable (eco friendly considering it's plastic). If you love this soap, you can buy the 1L refill and just keep reusing this bottle. The soap is obviously liquid, a little runnier than I expected and almost like castile soap, but lathers well and cleans fantastically. As a body wash, it's great. It leaves me squeaky clean, but not dry (like castile soap would). As a shampoo, it just doesn't work for my hair type. Having fine and minimally damaged hair, this is just too hydrating and my hair looks and feels greasy by the end of the day. My absolute favourite way to use this soap, is for my hands. I keep it by my sink and use it whenever I need to because it doesn't leave my hands dry or irritated. This soap is very versatile and gender neutral, in terms of scent, that it would be a great addition to any household. Also, it's perfect for those who appreciate or prefer minimal products/bottles because of it's many different uses. With it's Germs Away AromaBlend, it would be amazing for camping and at the cottage. Been using it nonstop, for a couple of months now, and have only used about half of it. I would definitely purchase once running out and highly recommend.

Retails for approx. $17 CAN for 240ml/ 8 fl oz. Can be purchased through Graydon or one of these retailers.

Ingredients: water (aqua), coconut based cleansing ingredient: coco glucoside (plantacar 818 UP), citric acid, rosemary botanical extract (rosmarinus officinalis leaf extract), grapefruit seed extract (cirtus grandis) ... spiked with a purifying blend of all-natural essential oils and nothing else

September 2013 Faves!

It seems lately I've been going through phases. One month I won't have any new faves to share with you and the next I have nothing but new products. This month is no exception! I have a bunch of new products that I've been loving and can't wait to share with you. Reviews to come. Guess this is a bit of a spoiler post though eh? :).

*SBT Seabuckthorn Day Cream - This stuff is fantastic. With the weather changing, my skin has been a little parched and this day cream has really helped restore hydration and help my makeup go on smoother.
*Corpa Flora Beauté Divine Camellia Facial Cleansing Oil - I don't normally go for cleansing oils because a bottle of plain oil (coconut, jojoba, apricot kernel, etc) works just as well and costs much less, BUT this stuff is sooooooo good. It removes makeup beautifully, rinses off easily, smells nice, and leaves my skin soft.
*Corpa Flora Éclat Citrouille (night serum/oil) - Ahhhh I adore the smell of this product! I apply it after cleansing and toning, at night, and wake up with plump and nourished skin.
*Purelygreat Women's Citrus Cream Deodorant - I didn't think this would work and there's definitely things that I don't like about it, but this keeps me stink free virtually all day. AND, and it smells like fruit loops! Will be testing it out on my sun vacation in a couple of weeks, that will be the true test.

*Pure+Simple Organic Bringraj Hair Oil - I've had this bottle for a little while now and with the weather cooling down, I've just started to use it again. It helps with my scalp dermatitis and leaves my hair silky smooth. I've been using it once a week, leaving it on overnight, and washing it out in the AM.

*Delizioso Skincare Organic Body Oil in Passion Fruit - review here - I still don't like the smell of this oil and that's why I only use it from the waist down, but I do love how nourishing the oil itself is. It leaves my skin silky smooth!

Pretty Skin Savior Body Oil -  Love, love, love. This is one of my favourite lines ever and this body oil has no disappointed me. The oil is infused with oatmeal which makes it very soothing for eczema prone and sensitive skin. I've been using it on my upper body and don't have one negative thus far.

*Graydon All Over Soap - This is a soap that can be used on your body and/or hair. I've tried it as a body wash and shampoo, but I love it as a hand soap most of all. Doesn't dry out my hands and smells lovely.

*Pure Anada African Gold - review here - I love this stuff. I apply it to dry patches on my face and body at night and used some in a recent DIY body butter. It's truly a must have for Fall/Winter.

Tassi - This was sent to me by the lovely Alexis, The Green Beauty Bunny, and I have been using it ever since. It's a wide towel-like head band that you use to keep your hair out of your face, brilliant! I use it to wash my face morning and night, and to apply makeup. Seriously, I friggen love it so much! I need to try and find them in Canada so that I can have a backup. Thanks so much Alexis!

What have you been absolutely loving in September?
