Brand Focus: ZAYA Oils (+Giveaway: CLOSED)

If I haven't said the following enough, I'll say it again, I love finding local brands! Canadians make some incredible products and many of my favourite skin care and makeup items are made right here, eh. I was thrilled with Anna, one of the beauties behind the brand, reached out asking if I wanted to try out some products. They are based out of Toronto and handcraft each of their beautiful oils using only wild-harvested and organic ingredients. I had the pleasure of meeting Anna at the Green Living Show earlier this year and wow, what a friggen beauty! Her skin was flawless, along with the other two ladies (whose names I forgot because I'm a horrible person).

Anna offered to send whichever oils appealed to me, and based on the ingredients and scents, I picked the *Eye Oil ($69.90 CAD/30 ml), *Face Oil ($59.90 CAD/50 ml), *Belly Oil ($49.90 CAD/100 ml), and *Body Oil ($43.90 CAD/100 ml). All of them came housed in dark glass bottles with pumps, for freshness and easy dispensing, and gorgeously packaged inside of a chic cardboard box with their corresponding characters. While I don't leave the boxes on my dresser, because I like to keep it minimal, these boxes have worked well to store larger pieces of jewelry that are kept in my dresser. I absolutely adore the packaging and appreciate the effort to create an artistic piece that can be re-purposed.
Our strong belief in natural skin care is blended with our passion for elegant beauty. We create them in desire to remind women that their beauty has countless number of faces. To inspire them to bring out their natural beauty, to be different, but irresistibly charming and elegant every day!
All our products are created in Canada (Toronto) in our own facility using only natural, wild-harvested and organic ingredients. The product compositions are thoroughly developed by the team of PhD chemists who have 15 years of experience on the natural skincare market. No synthetic ingredients ever cross the doorway of our manufacturing site. Our manufacturing is cruelty free and not harmful for the environment.

Like many responsible businesses nowadays we are trying our best to use only recyclable and environmentally friendly materials to package our products. The carton boxes we use are made of 100% recycled paper
[and can be used as a jewelry box]. Our bottles are made from beautiful high quality dark violet glass that offers optimal protection against the ageing processes that are released by visible light. So, you can make sure that the potency of our blends will not decrease over a long time period.

*Eye Oil Rosewood "The Magestic One": This oil blend was specially created to nurture and restore the delicate areas around your eyes. When applied in the morning, it hydrates the skin, helping your eyes look fresh throughout the day. When used in the evening, it gently removes makeup, while revitalizing and nourishing the skin.

Since I've started incorporating more oils into my skin care regime, I've found that my eyes don't get nearly as dry as they used to. That means that I no longer use creams or oils specifically designed for the eye area. Still, I decided to try out this oil for its intended purpose. By day 2, I had already forgotten to apply it. Now, I use one to two pumps to breakdown and remove eye makeup at night. The combination of sweet almond, rice bran, and macadamia nut oil leave my lashes and eyes well moisturized, even after removing with a cloth, but never feels greasy or heavy. The sweet and floral scent of rosewood is gorgeous and subtle. If you're into eye products, this is definitely one to try.

*Face Oil Rosewood "The Stunning One": This oil blend was specially created to delicately moisturize the skin without leaving the greasy feeling on your face. Carefully selected combination of oils deeply moisturizes your skin giving you a radiant glow

Ohhh how I love this face oil. It is loaded with sesame, evening primrose, grapeseed, and sweet almond oil, yet never feels greasy or heavy on my skin and absorbs quickly. The scent of rosewood is beautiful and I rarely get whiffs of geranium, which is a scent that normally bothers me. I apply one pump, in the P.M., to love my skin while I sleep. When I wake up, my skin is plump and well nourished. In the morning, I mix half a pump with a dime sized amount of moisturizer to create the perfect base for makeup. It hasn't irritated or broken out my sensitive, hormonal skin. Instead, it's helped calm redness, reduce dry patches, and even out my skin tone. Gorgeous, gorgeous oil and definitely my favourite of the four.

*Belly Oil Vanilla & Petitgrain "The Loving One": Specially created for Mothers-to-Be this oil blend nourishes your skin and maintains its natural elasticity. So comforting to the skin, it relaxes your body and soothes your mind. Pamper yourself and your little bean!

Before anyone asks, I'm not nor was I pregnant. I selected this belly oil based on the scent alone and I'm glad so that I did! The warm, smokey, and slightly spicy blend of vanilla and petitgrain make this oil a delight in the colder months and before bed. A little goes a long way, it absorbs into the skin with ease, and leaves the skin well moisturized. It contains sweet almond, rice bran, apricot, and macadamia nut oils, plus a few others, which I find to be rich enough to moisturize but light enough to properly absorb. Apricot kernal oil is actually one of my favourites!

*Body Oil "The Alluring One": Specially selected combination of oils keeps your skin hydrated and balanced. Giving your body a boost of nutritive energy this blend promotes the firm and smooth appearance of your skin.

This body oil is slightly thicker, due to the avocado and castor oils, but still absorbs really well. I absolutely love the combination of rosemary and grapefruit, it's fruity but still fresh and herbal. I have only been using it for about a week, but think it'll definitely be a love of mine through the warmer months, mainly because of the uplifting scent.

Brand Focus: Silkka Garden Apothecary

I've said it time and time again, I love discovering new Canadian brands. I feel as though Canadian brands don't often get recognized, despite having such fantastic products, and it's such a pleasure to see more brands putting themselves out there and getting recognition. Silkka Garden Apothecary has been raved about on several blogs around the globe, like Short, Small, & Sweet (USA), several times on Small Bits of Loveliness (Slovenia), and Elegantly Eco (Canada), just to name a few. It was only natural (pun intended) that with the brand's focus on pure, simple, and clean ingredients, that I'd have to try them out
Silkka is Finnish for pure and simple, and it's a nod to both my ancestry and the principles which guide the creations. While nature serves as inspiration, simplicity is always the intention. Using pure, natural ingredients known for their abilities to protect, heal and nurture the body's largest organ (our skin!), my goal is to create skincare products that are simple, beautiful and, most importantly, effective. As the old saying goes, less is more (and yes, this even applies to skincare).

Silkka products are handmade in small batches each week, using timeless ingredients from around the world. They'll always be free of harmful additives, and packed with good-for-you ingredients, like plant, nut and fruit-based oils and butters, essential oils, dried herbs and flowers, and unrefined Ontario beeswax. Product packaging is both recyclable and reusable (amber glass and tin), and packing materials used in shipping orders are always kept to a minimum. (And packaging material from supply orders are always re-used.)
Read more about Silkka here.

Liisa, Founder and Creator, gave me the opportunity to pick up a couple of products. I chose the *Blossom Hydration Mist ($15 cad/2 oz) and *Vanilla Love Body Oil ($21 cad/4 oz). The packaging of both items is lovely; dark glass bottles preserve the product housed inside, the labels and logo are so feminine and pretty, and the mister top/pump are perfection (more about that below). Also, both items only contain four ingredients..what!? Simplicity at its finest.

*Blossom Hydrating Mist: Balance mind and body with this delicate floral hydration mist. In aromatherapy Magnolia is lauded for its ability to relax and rejuvenate the spirit, and Chamomile its ability to comfort and calm. Aloe vera soothes and heals damaged skin, while Chamomile's anti-inflammatory properties calm redness and irritation. Pure botanical bliss for the skin and spirit.

Aside from the pretty bottle, the spray top is awesome. Not sure about the rest of the world, but I love when my toner provides a perfect all over mist with only one or two spritzes. This does that. It's.Just.So.Perfect. Yes, spray tops get me excited. It's the little things folks! Anyway....the hydrating mist instantly calmed redness, hydrated the skin, and set makeup. Sadly, the scent was not my favourite. The first ingredient is magnolia water, which if you know what that smells like, then you'll know what this smells like. For someone who had no clue, I didn't expect it to be as strong or linger for as long as it did. I used about a third of the bottle before I just couldn't do it anymore. On the plus side, Lisa from Glam Goes Green gets to enjoy it now! Scent is a personal thing and aside from that, this was a great toner/floral water.

*Vanilla Love Body Oil: Sweet, seductive vanilla. There's simply nothing more exquisite, more enticing; so much so that it demands centre stage in this gentle, lush body oil. Avocado oil provides long-lasting hydration, while oils of camellia and apricot are light and non-greasy, making Vanilla Love the perfect moisturizer for day and night use.

Be still my beating heart. Be still. I don't even know how to begin writing about this body oil as the thought alone makes my heart skip a beat. It smells like heaven! Like delicious vanilla. Edible vanilla. Walk around smelling like dessert vanilla. Want to smell like this all day, every day vanilla. Can't get over the scent vanilla. It is absolute perfection anddddd I think Liisa needs to create a perfume. Now that I've gone on and on about how amazing the scent is, how does it perform? On my super dry winter skin, it wasn't enough. It definitely needed to be layered, but I often find that with body oils. I also only used a tiny, tiny amount for fear of running out of this sweet smelling goodness. With the weather (hopefully) warming up soon, I'm certain that it'll be more than enough on its own. Regardless of needing to be layered, the oil absorbed incredibly fast without feeling greasy and the scent definitely lingered (which I was hoping it would). As for the pump on this bad boy, I prefer a pump that doesn't require me to actually hold the bottle, but I do like that it's virtually leak-proof making it ideal to travel with. I sense this becoming a regular item in my body care arsenal.

Magical: Corpa Flora Corpa Nutritive Body Treatment

Corpa Flora is a fantastic Canadian brand that I've been raving about since discovering them in late 2013. If you've already read my Favourites of 2014, then you would have seen that their skin care products are staples in my routine. Having tried out their entire skin care range, it only made sense to give their *Corpa Nutritive Moisturizing Body Treatment (aka body oil) a go as well.

Magical. This body oil is absolutely magical! I love that it comes in the same dark glass bottle, as all of their other products. Since I like to apply oils/moisturizers right out of the shower, this baby hangs out in there and because the pump is similiar to conventional store bought body lotions, it's so easy to dispense product without worrying about dropping the bottle or having it leak all over the place. The pump also locks, which I always appreciate.

Some of the beautiful oils that make up this gem are sunflower, pumpkin, macadamia, and rosehip; each containing their own beneficial properties like essential fatty acids, zinc, and antioxidants (vitamin A, C, and E). This combination makes the oil rich, yet light. It's so easy to blend on the skin, one to two pumps per part is all that's needed, and you're left feeling incredibly moisturized and nourished. The scent of this oil is hard for me to explain, seeing as I've never sniffed each individual essential oil used in it, however, I will say that it's a unisex scent. Spicy and citrusy. Definitely one many would enjoy or at least wouldn't mind. It doesn't linger for too long nor is it too strong upon application. I was really, really hoping that it would smell like Eclat Citrouille. Dear Celine, please make a body oil that smells like Eclat Citrouille! If you love body oils, I highly recommend trying out this one. It's beautiful! and magical, did I already say magical?

Retails for $37 CDN for 120 ml/4 fl. oz.

Shoosha Baby Calm Baby Massage Oil Review

As some of you may or may not know, I'm not a baby nor do I have a baby of my own but I do love me some baby products. How I see it is, if it's gentle enough for a baby then it's gentle enough for me! Shoosha was first introduced to me by Patricia, Founder, while she was demoing the goods at The Big Carrot. As with most creators, she was passionate and eager to get her products out there. Shoosha carries a fairly wide range of products and I've been told that their Rejuvenating Stretch Mark Serum doubles as an anti-aging facial serum.
Every day after work I would go home and experiment with making lip balms, hand lotions and soaps – and have the burned pots to show for it! I would create scents with essential oils that just made me so happy. My house started to smell of lavender and neroli, and I had pots full of beautiful balms and lotions that were simply gorgeous. I realized that I felt happier doing this than just about anything else. I had found my bliss.
Ingredient after ingredient in the vast majority of products were harmful. Carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, endocrine disrupters, plasticizers, formaldehyde and more! In baby care products? Despite all the care and attention I had taken as a mom, I had been pouring toxic chemicals on my children for their entire young lives. I also read an alarming statistic that children can accumulate up to 50% of their lifetime cancer risk by their 2nd birthday because of all the toxins they are exposed to, and their skin is 10 times thinner than an adults. I immediately researched all the organic standards, and realized there are a shocking lack of standards in the ‘natural’ care industry and many crazy marketing claims. This experience opened my eyes; women like me were being duped. That was my turning point.
That’s why I have listed my ingredients, their description and their purpose on this website. No secrets, no smoke and mirrors, no funky claims or dubious certifications. We chose USDA Certification because it’s the highest organic food grade standard in North America. Nobody should have to get a chemical degree to decide whether a product is safe or not. Trust ought to be more simple. Shoosha uses only pure, organic, beautiful ingredients that will nurture your delicate babies – and pamper you too.
I created Shoosha for anyone who wants to live a clean simple life, stay healthy and enjoy more time on earth with the people that they love so much.
Read more about Shoosha here.

Description: We only use the finest and purest organic oils infused in organic herbs for your baby’s delicate massage. Our oils are all organic food grade, and used for their calming and restorative aromatherapy benefits. Both Chamomile and Calendula are added for their anti-inflammatory and calming properties, both phenomenal for eczema and reducing redness and skin irritations.

While I've been eyeing this body oil for a very long time, I actually bought it because the OLO Cleansing Oil bottle went crazy and I couldn't get any product out of it. With ingredients like sunflower oil, calendula, chamomile, and lavender, how could this not make an amazing cleansing oil? Plus, it was on sale. Double bonus? I think so. As predicted, it makes a fantastic cleansing oil. It removes makeup with ease, smells delicious (not at all overpowering), doesn't break me out, and leaves my skin super soft. Although, I find it makes an even better body oil. I love how easily it absorbs into the skin, soothes and moisturizes dry skin, and leaves behind a light lavender vanilla scent. Divine. Basically, this is a great multipurpose product. The only draw back is the bottle, it often times leaks. It would probably make a mess if you were to travel with it. A lockable pump would be ideal, just saying. Other than that, it's a superb product for babies, kids, and adults. There's also an unscented version for those who prefer it.

Retails for approx. $22.99 CDN for Lavender Vanilla or $19.99 for Unscented. Both bottles are 118 ml. Can be purchased through Shoosha and one of these retailers.

Rave Review: Pretty Skin Savior Herbal Wellness Oil

Pretty is one of my all time favourite Canadian brands. I have loved almost every product that I have tried and their ingredients are exceptional. It was started by two sisters, one a Registered Dietitian and the other a Makeup Artist and Aesthetician, who wanted a line free of all nasties and suitable for the most sensitive of skins. Their products are free of synthetic fragrances and colours, sulphates, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, harsh preservatives, and pretty much anything else that you can't pronounce. You can read more about them here. For the record, they are not paying me to say anything nice about them and have never sent me free product. My love and passion for this line goes back to the beginning of my journey into natural products as it was one of the first brands I ever tried.

With that out of the way, let's talk body oil! Body oils are all the rage now and that's because they supply the skin with superb nourishment and benefits while still allowing it to breathe.

Description: Relieve dry, itchy skin without the use of cortisone or harsh ingredients. Calming oatmeal and soothing calendula are infused into a base of sweet almond and white tea oil. Lavender and juniper berry replenish moisture, relieve irritation and protect skin.

Guess what? I love this! Betcha didn't see that coming ;). The packaging is beautiful and very eco friendly, as it is with all of their products. The tinted glass bottle is light and comes with an upside down dropper that you can swap out for a pump. Don't you just love options? I personally prefer the pump because it's more convenient. The oil smells like the beauty section at a health food store, which is just lovely. It's not too overpowering and dissipates throughout the day. The oil absorbs into the skin really well, softening and moisturizing it while leaving a beautiful sheen. It hasn't stained any of my clothes or sheets, that I've noticed. I tend to get red patches on the back of my arms. There's no bumps or anything, it just looks irritated. This oil has helped reduce that redness upon application with it's soothing oatmeal and calendula infused almond oil and essential oil blend. Does it get any damn better?! I solely use this on my arms and any other irritated areas, like my hands. While it's targeted towards a specific skin type/condition, I think this would be a great all over body oil for anyone (unless you have sensitives to any of the ingredients of course). They have several other oils to choose from, if this one doesn't appeal to you. This oil is a beautiful indulgent treat for your skin that I think is well worth the price, especially considering the simplicity of the ingredients. I highly, highly recommend and would definitely repurchase!

Retails for approx. $24 CAN for 90ml. You can purchase it through Pretty. You can connect with them on Twitter, Facebook or send them an email to find a retailer closest to you.

Have you ever tried Pretty? If not, would you?

Ingredients: Oatmeal & calendula infused almond oil, camellia oil, safflower oil, jojoba oil, lavender oil, juniper oil, palmarosa oil, patchouli oil, rosemary oil, bergamot oil, rose geranium oil, orange oil

Delizioso Skincare Organic Body Oil in Passion Fruit Review

Body oils are something I never thought I'd fall in love with. Many have or have had a preconception that they won't absorb, will leave you greasy, stain your clothes and sheets, and just be a messy experience in general. If you're still one of those people, you're so wrong. Body oils are beautiful, luxurious and have many  benefits for the skin and nose.

Delizioso Skincare is a Toronto (Canada) based company that incorporates European based knowledge of skincare to create a truly wide variety of luxurious products. It was founded in 2008, by Ariel and Leeona Emerald, with the belief that products can be natural, still delicious (smelling), and cruelty free. The products are never diluted, so that you get the highest quality and the best results possible. All ingredients are natural, pure, many certified organic and use a unique blend of essential oils and plant derivates to create a "Natural Antioxidant Preservative".

After browsing their vast product selection, how could I turn down the opportunity to try out some products?! Actually, I looked straight at their body oils first and selected this *Organic Body Oil in Passion Fruit.

Description: Delicately scented 100% natural, moisturizing bath oils are made using RAW rice bran oil, olive oil and Vitamin E which are known for their nourishing effects. Because essential and fruit oils are water adverse they absorb in the bath even more readily. This oil will leave you refreshed, radiant and smelling divine. Always free of any synthetic ingredients.

This lush (it's my new word, sorry but I'm not sorry) oil comes in a clear plastic bottle with a pump. The pump itself is a little stiff  at first. It can be hard to work with because of the fact that it just squirts oil everywhere instead of slowly dispensing it, however, sometimes it works just fine. The label is really cute, I love that it's not overwhelming and that there's a picture of the passion fruit. The oil itself is just lovely! It easily (once dispensed by the possessed pump) massages and absorbs into the skin. Leaves my skin soft and nourished, never greasy and it hasn't stained any of my clothes or sheets. Considering that it's made up of heavy, nourishing oils (olive, coconut, avocado, etc), it also hasn't broken me out or irritated my skin at all. Now the scent, I'm not too fond of it and I don't blame Delizioso, perhaps I just don't know what passion fruit is supposed to actually smell like. After debating on what words to use to describe the scent, without making it sound awful, here's what I've come up with: it's sweet with an undertone of milk. Yah, you read that right. If any of you remember ever getting ice cream or milk on your skin, or the smell of your hand after carrying a bag of milk, that's what it smells like. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then I just sound like an absolute weirdo and I apologize for that. In any case, there are 20 other scents available to choose from, which means you're bound to find one you enjoy. I truly love the feel of this oil on my skin, and while I strongly dislike the scent, I'd highly recommend and would purchase a different scent.

Retails for $19.95 CAN/USD and £13.50 GBP. Can be purchased through Delizioso or one of their retailers.

With 21 scents available, which tickles your fancy most?

Ingredients: Oils of *Organic Olea europaea (Olive), *Organic Oryza sativa (Rice Bran), *Organic Cocos nucifera (Coconut), *Organic Persea gratissima (Avocado), Cranberry Seed, *Organic Sesamum indicum (Sesame), Vitamin E, *Grape fruit seed Extract, Kosher Certified PassionFruit Flavor Oil and Natural Antioxidant Preservative.

*Product sent for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Review: Indulge Yourself with Weleda's Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil

I've never been a body oil lover, I think it's because I was always afraid of it not soaking in and staining my clothes. When I won a gift basket, from a local health food store, I was so excited to see that there were some samples of the Weleda Pomegranate Body Oil. It was actually Ana, from Ana Goes Green, who convinced me to want to try this oil because of how much she's raved about it. Guys, it lives up to the hype!

Description: Aging and tired skin is revitalized by this renewing body oil. It’s a nourishing full-body treatment that regulates moisture balance and restores your natural vitality with potent antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Organic pomegranate seed oil contains powerful antioxidants that help promote skin renewal and protect against free radical damage. Organic jojoba seed oil preserves your natural moisture and acts as an emollient, nurturing your skin and improving its firmness.

I love this oil so, so, so much. The scent is sweet, but very light. If you're sensitive to scents, don't worry, this doesn't linger and it's not overwhelming by any means. I love the tinted glass bottle because it's reusable and the tint preserves the oil better but, of course, it's a little heavy to travel with. The dispenser isn't quite a dropper, it's easy to pour too much but easier to pour less than if it wasn't there. Did that even make sense? I hope so because I have no idea how to explain it. As you can see from the pictures below, this oil has a very light yellowish/orange colour and absorbs beautifully into the skin. Doesn't leave me greasy at all, just soft and well nourished the entire day. I still have dry patches (elbows, knees, etc) which I have to use a body balm on. In terms of it improving the firmness of my skin, I'm not sure. I haven't noticed a difference and Lord knows I could use some...or lots of...firming. Is this the world's best body oil? Maybe, I haven't tried many. Is it an oil worth indulging yourself in? Hell yes! I have already purchased a backup for myself and I'm not even half way through my first bottle.

Retails for approx. $30 CAN for 100ml. Can be purchased at most health food stores and through Weleda. I bought mine on sale at Whole Foods for $17.99 CAN (both of them).

Have you tried any of the Weleda Body Oils?
