Brand Focus: North Hill Soap Company

I love bar soap and find myself using it to wash my hands and, of course, my body, on a daily basis. It's important for me to support local soap makers that avoid the use of palm oil and any other questionable ingredients, and really put an emphasis on sustainability. When my friend Lisa, from Glam Goes Green, told me about North Hill Soap Company, I knew I had to try them out!

Welcome to North Hill Soap Company! We have been manufacturing hand-crafted, artisan soap since 2008. Our emphasis is on natural, sustainable ingredients, and 100% post-consumer recycled packaging. 

My name is Kelly Martin, and I am the soaper-in-chief at North Hill Soap Company, directing my family of four children and web-savvy husband in all their bubbly endeavours. 

Our family journey in soapmaking began with an innocent conversation. A family friend who owns a small-town art shop was lamenting her inability to find a soapmaker. I have always suffered from OCD- Obsessive Crafting Disorder. I have to try whatever craft is going by, and I thought, “I’m sure I can make soap!” 

I could never list all of the crafts I have dabbled in and moved on from, but soapmaking stuck. I fell in bubbly love almost immediately, and I haven’t looked back since. Not only do I enjoy the process, but once you start using handmade soap, you really can’t go back to store-bought. The difference in your skin is so obvious, you would never want to feel dry, itchy and rough again. Not to mention the confidence in knowing what you and your family are putting onto (and hence into) your body.

The packaging is absolutely awesome! I love the colours and design of each one, as well as the fact that they come in post consumer recycled packaging. Seriously, just look at those boxes! After reaching out to Kelly, she was kind enough to allow me to select a few bars of soap. I chose *Sea Goddess, *Happy Hippie, *Blackbeard's Booty, *Sex On The Beach, and *Earth Goddess.

*Sea Goddess: The Mediterranean Sea provides us with so many Gifts of beauty– it’s no wonder Aphrodite is pictured as being Born from the waves! Sea salt will polish your skin to glowing freshness, and Spirulina Algae is a tremendous source of Antioxidants. 

In theory, this soap sounds amazing and I was really excited for it. Sadly, it fell short. The scent and texture reminds me of soap that my grandma used, in Portugal, to wash her clothes. I'm talking the old school way of washing clothes; a bar of soap and bucket. I find that it can either be harsh or feel like you're dragging a dry soap bar on dry skin regardless of how wet both are. This is definitely my least favourite.

*Happy Hippie: Tempt your inner peace child with the earthy scent of patchouli, and enjoy the moisturizing benefits of hemp butter in our grooviest soap bar. Made with Organic Canadian Hemp Milk & Calendula Petals, you may have to find your love beads and flower crown after this far-out shower experience!

This is my favourite of all the bars. It smells in-freakin-credible, is ever so gently exfoliating, nourishing, creamy, and just lovely to use. I can't get over the scent and love that it fragrances my bathroom with a light hint of patchouli. I'm such a hippie eh?

*Blackbeard's Booty: When Blackbeard took his yearly bath, we’re sure this is the soap he favoured. Sail your pirate armada in your bath, while you enjoy the spicy sweet scent of bay rum essential oil straight from the Dominican Republic. Poppy Seeds add a gentle exfoliation.

How cute is the name and little pirate skull on the bar of soap?! This is my second favourite of them all. I love the (truly) spicy sweet scent of the bay rum, which is very unisex leaning towards masculine, and how lovely the poppy seeds feel on the skin. It leaves my skin exfoliated, nourished, and baby soft.

*Sex On The Beach: The fruit acids in our blend of tropical fruits encourage cell turnover, and help to dissolve the glue holding together the top layer of cells. Immerse yourself in memories of a Caribbean vacation. Notes of citrus will whisk you off to an island paradise, fruity drink in hand.

I'm sure you can all guess that what attracted me to this soap was the fact that it's supposed to be like a chemical exfoliant for the body, however, I'm not convinced it actually does much in that department. Usually with chemical exfoliants, your skin will tingle. This soap doesn't tingle whatsoever, not even on breakouts. I mean, obviously it's not meant to be an intense, all over body peel. Just thought it would be worth mentioning, in case that's the reason you decide to choose this particular bar. If you're looking for a soap bar that smells fruity, feels great on the skin, and leaves it feeling soft, this is the one for you! Out of the 5 bars, this one is in my top 3.

*Earth Goddess: Kaolin is the most gentle of all the clays, drawing impurities from your skin without stripping your natural oils. Kaolin clay is suitable for all skin types, and exfoliates gently enough to be used even on your face! This beautiful bar also includes Himalayan Pink Salt, which will draw out impurities while providing necessary minerals to your skin.
Lastly, we have Earth Goddess! This one is really nice and leaves my skin soft, just like the others, but it didn't live up to my expectations. I expected it to help with breakouts, because of its clarifying properities (pink and green clay). It doesn't. I also don't find it fragranced enough considering it contains patchouli and lavender, two dominant essential oils. Still really nice, just not one I'd repurchase.
All in all, I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to try out this amazing Canadian brand. Their soaps really are beautiful and reasonable priced considering the quality. I will 100% be purchasing Happy Hippie and Blackbeard's Booty once I run out and highly recommend.

Brand Focus: Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet. Meeeooow Meeeeooow Tweet. I just love saying that name, anyone else? It's fun, sassy, and creative, much like the packaging and Founders/Creators (Tara and Jeff). This small batch, American, company has been blowing up, and with good reason. Their products are well thought out and made with nothing but pure love. I've actually already reviewed their Lavender Deodorant Cream. Since then, MMT has kindly sent me a bunch of a samples to try out and one in particular has blown my mind.

MMT sent me a sample of their *Rosemary Lime Soap, *Face + Body Toning Mist, *Cocoa Lip Balm (full size), *Face Oil, *Cocoa Cream, and *Tea Tree Lavender Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream. Ingredients for each of these products will be listed at the very end of this post.

*Rosemary Lime Soap: This soap is a real treat. I've been using it to wash my hands and absolutely adore the bits of cornmeal that gently exfoliate. The scent is light and fresh, and I love how well it melts makeup off of my hands. Also, I love that they don't use palm oil in their soaps. I got my eye on their Cinnamon Coffee bar and Grapefruit Mint bar.

*Cocoa Cream: This chocolate smelling goodness is super rich and nourishing. It melts on contact with the skin and soaks right in. I love that this contains absolutely no waxes, it's just rich oils and butters. I'm saving it for the polar vortex weather (*cries*)!

*Tea Tree Lavender Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream: This deodorant doesn't work well for me. I hate the strong tea tree scent and find that I get stinky within a couple of hours. This is not available, it was kindly custom blended for me. However, they do have a baking soda free deodorant that actually does work and IS available. Keep scrolling to read about it :).

*Face + Body Toning Mist in Geranium Basil: Tara had mentioned that this could work well to soothe and deodorize my irritated pits, it did. I also tried it on my face and enjoyed how refreshing it was. Given that the sample is so small, I think it's great to determine scent preference. I'm not a fan of geranium, although it's great for the skin, and wasn't keen on the overall scent of this mist.

*Face Oil: This facial oil is packed with exceptional oils, however, I found the essential oil blend a bit strong. I think it's the vetiver that just takes over and lingers. In the warmer months, it worked amazingly well as a base for my makeup. It provided enough moisture, but was light enough to keep me from feeling or getting greasy during the day. It balanced my skin perfectly. Now that it's colder, this doesn't cut it for my dry skin. I will definitely consider purchasing a full size next summer and recommend giving it a go if you live somewhere warm or have oily skin.

*Cocoa Lip Balm: Cocoa butter based lip balms are some of my absolutely faves, they tend to work so well for my lips and this is no exception. It's rich, moisturizing, delicious, and amazing. My only issue is that cocoa butter tends to melt and solidify with temperature changes (obviously), making the texture a bit rough. Luckily, it hasn't happened with this one yet. This is probably one of my favourite lip balms to date.

*Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream in Grapefruit (mind blown!): I saved the best for last! Spoiler alert, the full size (pictured on the left) was purchased with my own money from Glam Goes Green. Tara sent me a surprise package containing a sample (pictured on the right) of this deodorant. The fresh grapefruit scent is uplifting and instantly intoxicated my nasal passage. For all of you baking soda sensitive people out there, this is the only deodorant you will ever need! It keeps me stink free all damn day, without irritating my pits, AND I can safely perform spa services without worrying about stinking. I'm in love and highly, highly recommend giving it a try! Full size retails for $13 USD/$15 CDN for 2.4 oz.

Brand Focus: Batch Naturals

I love discovering new brands, especially when they're Canadian. Of course I was over the moon excited when one of my good friends gave me a few natural goodies from Batch Naturals, a Canadian brand that I had never tried or even heard of, for Christmas.

Batch Naturals is a one woman show. I do everything from creating the design and labels on my products, to the actual product. Once in awhile my 9 year old son assists me by manning the booth at artisan shows.

All of my skin care products are made by hand in my small home studio. I aim to give you softer, smoother and healthier skin using quality ingredients. I truly love what I do. I have spent countless of hours researching and communicating with the farmers and producers responsible for the ingredients in my products, and I support the farmers and gatherers of my ingredients implicitly. They are small farmers, some local, and in regions that cannot afford being certified organic and fair trade because of the costs involved, even though they still follow traditional farming practices that don't involve pesticides and chemicals. I have always been the one to support the underdog.

My obsession with research drives me forward every day to gain knowledge and formulate quality products. My passion for knowledge, combined with my love and dedication to creating what is best for us in this chemical burdened world is what keeps me motivated. 

It all started when I had to create chemical free products for my chemical sensitive son. I also recognized that there was a need to resist the status quo of chemical laden, synthetic and petroleum based products. By resisting the unhealthy, we’re embracing longevity.
Armed with an arsenal of knowledge and healthy ingredients, I intend to change the world! Or at least make it healthier for us.

My friend was kind enough to gift me the Abyssinian Body Oil Whip, Multipurpose Cream, and a soap.

Ingredients: distilled water, abyssinian oil, organic virgin coconut oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, stearic acid (plant derived), eco cert emulsifying wax, citric acid, potassium sorbate, radish root ferment filtrate, pthalate free fragrance

Description: This abyssinian oil body whip has a mysterious, sweet, earthy aroma. Notes of amber, patchouli, rose and sandalwood blends with nuances of jasmine and citrus to bring out subtle spice undertones. Base notes of vanilla and powder completes this scent. Filled with the goodness of premium oils (abyssinian, extra virgin coconut) and natural cocoa butter it isn’t the least bit oily. This fast absorbing, paraben-free formula is fantastic for even the most sensitive skin. Retails for $8 CDN for 60 ml.

Given the fact that this body whip has a beautiful blend of oils and cocoa butter, it absorbs surprisingly well without leaving any greasy feeling. I'm not sure what it feels like to rub a fluffy moist cloud on my body but, I imagine it would feel something like this body whip. It's hydrating, however, I don't think it's enough for very dry skin. The scent is very strong, delicious, but strong. Although the scent dies down, it lingers most of the day. Something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to scents. The same friend who gave me this, told me that she was using it on her combination facial skin and enjoyed how nourishing it was when her skin was feeling dry. This product was a major win in my books.

Description: Our creams moisturize hands, feet, and body. Recommended application is right after you get out of the shower or bath for a little pampering or before you go outside in the cooler months. A little bit goes a very long way, just take a small portion on your finger tip and apply. As it warms on your skin it will spread further. Our creams are slightly heavier so they go a long way with maximum moisturization properties. Retails for $13 CDN for 60 ml.

This balm textured "cream" is rich and perfect for applying on extremely dry areas, like elbows, knees and feet. Actually, I always apply it on my feet after a shower to keep them soft and well moisturized. Since it is a balm texture, a little goes a long way and needs to be massaged into the skin for better absorption. Otherwise, it can be a little greasy. It smells more like lime, than coconut, and isn't as strong nor does it linger as long as the body whip. A lovely product that will last a long time.

Description: We make our bars in small batches from scratch by cold press method. We use our own simple recipe blending the purest and healthiest ingredients. A beautiful soap with a fantastic scent, made with coconut oil that gives a moisturising and creamy lather. A Blend of virgin unrefined coconut oil, organic olive oil and avocado butter create a mild, skin-nourishing soap with refreshing scent of lemongrass and sweet basil. Retails for $4.50 CDN for approx. 100 g bar.

Lemongrass and/or basil aren't scents that I normally gravitate towards but, this soap smells so good! Without being too strong or lingering for long, it gives you a fresh burst of fragrance that instantly wakens up your senses. It lathered well and left my skin soft, never dry. I also like that there's kaolin clay in it, perfect for blemished skin. Yes, I get blemishes on my chest, shoulders and back *cries*. Even though it didn't last very long, I really, really like this soap.

On A Branch Soap: Monday Morning Review

Hi lovelies! Sorry that I've been MIA. My internet has been up and down, friggen technology, and I haven't had the patience to deal with it. Going to try and write a bunch of posts now so that I can just upload them should it go down again :). Now for the review!

I love soap. While there's almost always a body wash in my shower rotation, soap is where my heart and addiction lays. During my visit to Anise Apothecary, On A Branch Soaps suckered me in with it's beautiful and creative packaging (just look below), and scent selection. My boyfriend was sweet enough to pick me up Monday Morning.

On A Branch Soaps is a Canadian brand, made in Burlington, Ontario. Tara Patey, owner/creator/artisan, is very passionate about the products that she creates and makes each one with love and care. She's constantly playing with different soap ideas, scents, designs, and even willing to make one unique to your business/event.

Monday Morning is scented with cinnamon and blood orange, and while it does contain coffee grinds, it doesn't smell of it (sadly). The scent that comes through most is the cinnamon, which I absolutely adore. I will say that the scent isn't as strong in my shower (during use) as it is when I smell the bar directly or even packaging. Speaking of packaging, how effen cute? She hand wraps each one in beautiful decorative paper, which is both eco friendly and pretty to look at, and stamps them with her logo. Her logo, the bird, was actually created by her. See what I mean, a whole lotta love goes into each soap! Back to Monday Morning. While this soap is lovely, I find the coffee grinds to be a little too sharp and harsh on my body. I did mention that to Tara, and she quickly apologized and made a note to grind them up a little more in the future. Aside from that, I have nothing bad to say about the brand. The ingredients are fantastic, the soaps affordable, and Tara is a pleasure to deal with (should you purchase from her and not a retailer).

Ground Soap "Lemme Bee Your Honey" & "Backbone" Review

Back in April, when I attended the Green Living Show, I was eager to find the Ground Soap booth. After walking around the entire show, and not finding it, I decided to give up and just head out. Seeing how disappointed I was, my boyfriend convinced me to ask the guy at the front doors where the booth was. So glad I did, because I found it!

I was instantly greeted by Angela Youngs, soapmaker and owner. She's a passionate individual, loaded with information on ingredients. She shared her struggles with making soap and how it took several batches of trial and error to finally perfect her recipes. She admitted to wanting to give up, and how her husband convinced her not to. Good job hubby! My boyfriend and I had so much fun talking with her, learning, listening, and buying soap! All of her ingredients are organic and wildcrafted, contain no parabens or synthetic scents and dyes, and it's bidegradable which means our planet will be happy even when you bathe in your cottage lake. Her packaging is also very environmentally friendly AND visually appealing. Each bar is wrapped in reusable fabric. I asked her why fabric? She said because she wanted it to look different than other soap, keep the planet happy, all while still keeping the bar itself from getting touched. Funny enough, I didn't realize how many people hated having their soap touched by random people, until I worked at Lush. Angela kindly gave me two bars for the price of one, so I got Lemme Bee Your Honey and Backbone.

Description: You'll want to take a bite of this one. Oatmeal offers exfoliating and soothing properties and is also a natural skin toner while generous portions of honey and shea butter lather and moisturize. Both men and women love this soap for shaving because it softens stubble and leaves skin smooth and clean. Honey is also known to be an ancient remedy for the treatment of infected wounds. Serious skin affection!

I love soap and am constantly on the look out for new companies (especially Canadian) to try. What sold me on this bar was the fantastic ingredients + the fact that it's their top seller. It's combination of butters, honey, and oats made my skin sing before even trying it. It has a mild citrus scent that is in no way overwhelming and definitely doesn't linger, perfect for you scent sensitive individuals out there. It's also great for those who aren't big citrus lovers, such as myself.  In order to prolong the use of each bar, I cut mine in half and it's (one half) literally lasted me longer than any other soap I've used. On to performance...it's such a pleasure to use! It doesn't hydrate as well as I expected, but it definitely doesn't leave me feeling dry or itchy. The only thing that I don't like is the oatmeal chunks. I have to really wet the bar before using it, otherwise they can be a tad abrasive, especially when washing sensitive areas. It's not that big a deal, just thought I'd throw it out there. I haven't tried it as a shave bar yet, but I will give it a go one of these days and report back on an empties post.

Next up? Backbone!

Description: Packed full of life, the soothing spice oils of cinnamon and clove create a warm sensation on the skin. There's tons of stuff on the go with this bar. It's made with antibacterial, antimicrobial and stimulation ingredients that work together to scrub, detoxify and uplift while moisturizing with the rich butters of shea and orange. Cinnamon is also an aphrodisiac.......Besides being a great body bar - it smells yummy in the kitchen alongside the sink.

I was instantly drawn to the beautiful cinnamon and clove combination that intoxicated my nose when I first sniffed it. It's absolutely intoxicating, yet the scent doesn't linger on the body for long. Which is cool with me! The Annatto seeds (I think) are what causes the sand like exfoliating texture that just gives me a really good scrub. The trick to using this bar, in order to not feel like your skin's getting scratched, is to hold it lightly against your body and rub in circular motions. I love how it warms and tingles my body every time I use it, definitely gets my circulation going! Literally, it feels like the blood is happily circulating. What did you think I meant?! Naughty, naughty. For someone prone to back, check and shoulder breakouts, I love that this keeps it all under control with it's detoxifying clay and bacteria killing essential oils. Out of the two bars, this is my absolute favourite and very likely repurchase (if I can physically get my hands on it).

I wish more health food stores and online shops would start selling these bad boys, they're amazing and well worth the price.

Dr. Bronner's Shikakai Soap in Lavender Review

I love Dr. Bronner's castile soaps and when I won this little gem from a Noah's facebook contest, along with a Dr. Bronner's bar soap, I was over the moon excited! Up until I won this, I was using Bath & Body Works antibacterial hand soap. I know *hangs head in shame*, naughty girl!  I was actually using that and the Bronner's castile liquid soap, depended on what was nearest to me really. I'm in love, love, loveee!

Description: Certified by the same National Organic Program that certifies food our pump soaps are smooth and luxurious with no synthetic detergents or preservatives. Organic Shikakai comes from the seed pods of the small South Asian tree Acadia Concinna and has been used for millennia in India as a gentle conditioning cleanser for both skin and hair. We extract the Shikakai in organic sugar and grape juice and combine with Dr. Bronner's unsurpassed castile soap base for rich emollient lather and moisturizing after feel.


This hand soap is as expected being a Dr. Bronner's product, awesome! The soap comes in a purple (for lavender, get it? *winks*) plastic bottle with the fun to read label. It's a pretty runny formula, but lathers well and smells beautiful. For the record, my boyfriend is all about the BBW scented hand soaps, but really enjoys using this one and enjoys the scent. It's not an overpowering or overwhelming lavender, but it's a definite lavender. Lavender, lavender, lavender, lavender, how many times can I say that in a sentence? It leaves my hands sooooo soft, clean and smelling like lavender. I couldn't figure out how to avoid using that word again. The only thing that I don't like about this soap, is that it leaves an oily film in my sink which means I have to clean it every couple of days instead of weekly. I love having a clean bathroom but hate actually cleaning it, anyone else feel the same? I would still definitely repurchase though.

Bubs & Scrubs Coconut Milk Soap Review

This was yet another product that Marcella sent me in our swap last month. I had actually picked it because I love trying new soaps, mostly to see how they compare to Hugo Naturals. Nothing compares to Hugo Naturals! I can't remember the site that I selected it from but hopefully Marcella will post it below. She's been busy with school and I definitely don't want to bother her.

Description: This all natural coconut milk soap is as pure as it gets. We've made it without any added scent or color; simply luxurious. The addition of coconut milk creates a remarkably creamy lather and is gentle enough for your face, babies and all skin types.

The Good:

• gentle
• cleansing
• hydrating
• scentless (also falls under The Bad)
• perfect for babies and those with allergies
• minimal & cute packaging

The Bad:

• scentless
• somewhat expensive

Verdict: Not bad but it's no Hugo. The fact that there's no scent is great for those who are ultra sensitive to them and babies, however I like my soap to smell nice. On the plus, they do have scented coconut milk soaps. I found it did a nice job of cleansing and hydrating my skin. There were days when I didn't even need to moisturize anything but my elbows, knees and feet. It's super gentle, never irritated my skin or lady bits. In terms of pricing, it's can be expensive depending on where you buy it from, it ranges from $4 USD to $6.50 USD for a 3.5oz bar. The minimal and wax paper packaging and logo on the soap itself is really cute. I also enjoy the minimal ingredient list. I would definitely be interested in trying more of their bar soaps.

Hugo Naturals Soap Mini Haul

I friggen ADORE Hugo's soaps so much.  I reviewed them last year in May and can honestly say that no soap even comes close to how amazing these are. They lather nicely, are creamy and hydrating, and come in so many delicious scents.  I picked up a few bars in the last couple of months because, well, I needed them. Honest! Why I needed this many, I don't know.

I currently only have these four bars on hand and one of them is now in my shower.

 Vanilla Peppermint and Sweet Eucalyptus were holiday scents and damn are they ever good! Their name describes exactly how they smell.  I haven't actually used either of them yet but I have no doubt they will be fantastic.

The one below, on the left, is White Chocolate Raspberry...what? YUM! Nom nom nom. Guys, it smells absolutely delicious. It's clearly the one that I put in my shower, after taking these pictures, and my entire bathroom smells of it. The scent lingers on the skin for a bit and it's as wonderful as the handcrafted soaps. I believe this is their Artisan soap and you purchase it by weight.  That chunk was just under $4 CAN and worth every damn penny! Then I have my Shea Butter & Oatmeal bar which is one of my faves because it's so hydrating and has the oatmeal for gentle exfoliation.
